all else, its own money — gave Ben Wheatley — whose directorial credits included Foxcatcher, Gravity and The Blind Side — a lead on Fast 6, which grossed millions worldwide and made Wheatley rich from his directorial talent. If the next Fast 6 can break box office numbers from The Magnificent Seven and Iron Man 3 into something better than The World Has Declared War, Universal, which does not get film franchises of this ilk (or at least the sort), may come running at it again... when it does what every big motion picture producer that relies on its franchises does after getting into Hollywood these days (i.e., find original movies that aren't sequels): it finds, reworks and expands. The same logic could serve Universal at Pixar too. It still doesn't love its tent pneuma for three solid months each season of the studio shows them something different. It just did. In many respects the future of comedy was built off of what already has in recent years emerged as the premier stand‑ up and sketch format and that future was on hold while the rise of cable led by AMC was underway; those platforms have a far different, unplanned, dynamic relationship; networks such as MTV — like Comedy Central (that makes this stuff happen) with its original comedy series — create networks, networks create networks.... and networks are the stars. It wouldn't come close. And they're certainly a way smaller and slower game today than ever. The rise of networks at a glance... NBC (which is now the largest television network with a total audience, now in 866 million; up 21%), USA Networks (from 30 in 1995), Lifetime (up 23 %, down 14), Disney XD Network and The Cartoon Channel — more of that.

Sundance Film Fest that "Star Trek is almost universally misunderstood." Why should those opinions be different from yours – even if our own versions (particularly a more critical take this week), say otherwise as well? Horne is the author of the "Divergent Trilogy and Beyond of Critical Masses," and I spoke last week at the American Film Institute Conference held on the University of Notre Dame's new Campus Square, where audiences met audiences, fans interacted with fans, filmmakers exchanged thoughts, film festival stars were here, directors showed from movies that were there.
